Auckland · The last day
Three Possible Itineraries
Sunday, July 19, 2026 • one full day, then home
Auckland comes down to a single day — and it's winter, so the plan flexes with the forecast. Friday and Saturday are the same no matter what; for Sunday, one look at the morning sky picks the version. All three end at the same place: bags by 3:30, airport by 4, wheels up at 7:50.
The lead-in · same either way
- Fri
Land in Auckland, ~9:30pmLast flight out of Christchurch (8:10pm) after a full day with Wayne. Taxi to Hotel Indigo and crash.
- 6:05a
Sat · Hobbiton + Waitomo pickupPicked up at the hotel door for the 11-hour day trip to the Shire and the glowworm caves.
- ~6:30p
Back in the city · dinnerEat around Federal Street or the Viaduct, a few minutes from the hotel.
- ~7:00p
Sky Tower after darkOpen Fri–Sun till 8:30 (last entry 7:45). Sunset's already gone — so it's all city lights from the top.
Then Sunday — pick one
Decide on the morning forecast. The rest of the day follows from there.
☀ Plan A · Clear skies, send it
The aerial finale
If the morning is genuinely clear — the bang-finish that shows you everything at once.
- Morning
Check the forecast — make the go/no-go call.If it's clear, commit. If it's marginal, slide over to Plan B.
- 9:10a
Uber to Rosedale Heliport, Albany~25 min up to the North Shore. (Ask at booking about the other departure pads — there may be one closer to town.)
- 10:00a
Volcanoes & Beaches scenic flight18 minutes over the harbour, the Devonport naval base, the Harbour Bridge, Sky Tower and the eastern bays — with a summit pass over Rangitoto.
- ~11:15a
Back downtown
- 11:30a
Ferry Building lunch + Queens WharfHarbour-side lunch, then The Cloud and the Lighthouse sculpture — quick and easy.
- 12:45p
Your pick on the water or on footEither the Devonport ferry round-trip, or stroll west through Wynyard Quarter to Westhaven for the bridge. (Optional: a ~12:30 Weta Workshop slot — that's the workshop experience, separate from the views.)
- 3:30p

The two-seat wrinkle: the flight only departs with two passengers. Buying both seats (~NZ$620 / ~US$364) effectively makes it a private charter — worth it only if the morning's genuinely clear and this is your #1. If it's marginal, don't force it.
⛅ Plan B · The Big Walk
City, harbour & across the water
If it's dry but the heli's a no-go — the full local day, all on foot (plus one ferry).
- 9:45a
Weta WorkshopFirst slot of the day, 4 minutes from the hotel. ~90 min.
- 11:15a
Up through Albert ParkPast the University ClockTower and the Auckland Art Gallery (exteriors — the gallery itself lives in Plan C).
- 11:45a
Down Queen StreetPast the Town Hall and Aotea Square, heading for the waterfront.
- 12:30p
Ferry Building lunch
- 1:00p
Devonport ferry12 minutes each way; the village, plus the walk up Mt Victoria for the skyline shot back across the harbour. ~2 hrs.
- 3:00p
Back across — Westhaven if time allowsWest along the Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter toward the Harbour Bridge.
- 3:30p
Back for bags →
If the day runs tight: the real choose-one is the Devonport ferry vs. the Westhaven / bridge leg — both lovely. Ferry if you want time on the water; Westhaven if you'd rather stay on foot and get close to the bridge.
☂ Plan C · Winter wins
The dry-indoors day
If it's properly wet — the heli's scrubbed and the walks lose their shine, so lean into great covered spaces.
- 9:45a
Weta WorkshopIndoors and right by the hotel — the perfect wet-morning anchor.
- 11:15a
New Zealand Maritime MuseumOn the wharf, fully covered, and fitting for the City of Sails — Americas Cup boats and Māori voyaging.
- 12:30p
Lunch, staying dryThrough the Queen Street arcades / Commercial Bay / Britomart.
- 1:15p
Auckland Art GalleryAt the edge of Albert Park — excellent, and about an hour.
- opt.
Auckland Museum (the centerpiece)The one scenario where it earns its keep — Uber out to the Domain for the world-class Māori & Pacific galleries if you want a big indoor finish.
- 3:30p
Back for bags →
No FOMO on the views you're skipping — on a wet day there aren't any to get. This is the plan that turns the weather into an excuse for the best of indoor Auckland.
